In 1891, the United States Letter Carriers Mutual Benefit Association (MBA) was founded to provide life insurance coverage to NALC-HQ members and their families. The MBA is NALC-HQ’s life insurance division. There is over $224 million of life insurance in force on NALC-HQ members with plans offered by the MBA. These plans are designed to provide the best possible protection for the lowest price.

National Convention
The NALC-HQ prides itself on member participation and governance. Every two years, members elect delegates to its national convention, the union’s supreme governing body. NALC-HQ’s biennial convention is one of the largest union gatherings, which reflects the views of its members.
Nalcrest
NALC-HQ’s retirement community, Nalcrest, has the most entertaining neighbors: letter carriers. Between Tampa and Vero Beach in Central Florida, Nalcrest has 500 garden-style apartments arranged in clusters of four to ten units, all on ground level, surrounded by two lagoons on the shoreline of a stunning lake in Central Florida.
Nalcrest just celebrated its 50th anniversary and offers many amenities to retirees, including an Olympic-size pool, hot tub, shuffleboard, horseshoes, basketball, bocce, miniature golf, tennis, chapel, library, and travel club. There are also a variety of social and hobby clubs created by residents. The best part is that they enjoy each other’s company. Apartments with one or two bedrooms are available in efficiency.
NALC Auxiliary
Letter carriers’ interests led to the formation of the National Ladies Auxiliary in 1905, which foreshadowed today’s NALC-HQ Auxiliary. This was because of their relationships as wives, daughters, mothers and sisters of letter carriers. Their aim was to help gain favorable legislation to provide better working conditions for letter carriers. In addition to laws requiring Sunday closings, shorter work days, sick leaves, and compensation for workplace injuries, it also provided salary increases and annuities to widows and dependents.
Member Education
NALC-HQ’s Ministry of Education provides educational opportunities and educational materials for NALC-HQ officers, trustees, advocates and members.
Since 2006, NALC-HQ has sponsored letter men representing each of its 15 regions in the NALC-HQ Leadership Academy. This is an intensive training program to develop leadership skills.
Scholarships
The NALC-HQ member community has access to a number of scholarship funds that can assist them financially in pursuing higher education for themselves or their children, including the William C Doherty Scholarship Fund, the John T Donelon Scholarship Fund, the Costs Scholarship Fund Monopolizes Scholarship Trust, and the Union Plus Scholarship Program.
The organization now includes wives, relatives, and friends of letter carriers, but its basic goals remain the same: promoting letter carriers’ interests and those of their families.
NALC-HQ Apps
We provide our members with two mobile apps from NALC-HQ.
Updates, workplace resources, legislative tools, and more are all included in the NALC Member App.
This NALC-HQ Track Hours App allows you to enter basic clock ring entries such as “begin tour,” “office and street move” and “end tour” in real-time. Based on the entries you make, it will calculate the number of hours of straight time, overtime and penalty time you should be compensated for each pay period.
Accidental Death Benefits for the NALC-HQ Group
All NALC-HQ members are covered by a death benefit in case of accident. Since 1985, NALC-HQ has provided group insurance coverage. Those in good standing at the NALC-HQ are eligible for this benefit, including active members, retired members, and city carrier assistants. Also included are employees who are not supervisors in the postal career service. There is no cost to members for the basic benefit coverage of $5,000.
